What Is The Paleo Diet?
It does not take a lot of time for you to discover that most diets are just a fad. Then why not try a very successful old diet. As in one that’s more than 10,000 years old! It’s called the paleo diet – named for a period in history that scientists commonly refer to as the Paleolithic times.
Dr. Loren Cordain, who researches deeply into the paleo diet claims that 70% of the food North Americans eat today is stuff our paleo ancestors wouldn’t even recognize. Popular high calorie fast food such as French fries, cheeseburgers, potato chips, Super Big Gulps and the like did not exist. The result of this is the lack of the variety of health issues North Americans encounter today such as obesity and diabetes. Professor Cordain is of the opinion that our ancestors lived on completely natural food and that because farming was not discovered yet, drinking milk or eating grains were not part of their meals. Instead, they spent most of their time in “hunter-gatherer mode” – eating whatever food they could find.
So would this paleo / primal diet work in today’s world? Actually, yes! Most nutrition experts agree that it doesn’t matter if you’re choosing a diet that’s 10,000 years old or not It’s best to eat whole foods – ones that could either be caught, killed, or picked from a tree. The experts say that it might be a good idea to keep milk and grains in your diet because they have a considerable positive impact in the growth of healthy bones and cells. If you decide to continue consuming dairy products, it is recommended that you choose those that are organic, raw and grass fed. As for the grains, choose the food that is made of whole grains since the healthy nutrients have been stripped from the processed grains.
Remember that whatever food you decide to eat, a paleo cookbook is always within your reach. Before we miss it, our paleo ancestors had one other thing going for them. They exercised! Sure, they were running from wild animals and had to walk everywhere, but, even now, the key to losing weight is to never eat more calories than your body can burn in a day.
