The mitochondria are these very tiny power plants within cells responsible for producing cell energy. Imagine that they are the little batteries that make cells work, and when they are damaged they leak out electrons or little amounts of toxic material that becomes damaging free radicals. Another study done in china using mice showed that Insulin which is a hormone that controls blood sugar. In the research trail scientists documented that resveratrol spurs a gene called SIRT1 to become more active, boosting insulin sensitivity, and by spurring the gene it curbed insulin resistance in mice; insulin resistance is a condition that occurs when the body becomes less sensitive to insulin. When this occurs it can lead to type 2 diabetes.  However, to reach the same levels of resveratrol, it would require a significant consumption of red wine.  It is noted in the study that a person would have to drink 3 liters of wine a day to even come close, and it is not recommended for diabetics, or anyone else for that matter to rely on red wine for their health.
The studies give new hope to new cures perhaps using resveratrol, but researchers were quick to point out that you cannot eat or consume enough wine to reach the levels needed for this to be possible. Resveratrol pills, supplements, and new formulations of resveratrol need to be used to be of any benefit.
