As a result of today’s fast lifestyle, often referred to as the “rat race,” one of the aspects that suffers most is our diets. In the end, we eat foods that are easy to buy (a.k.a. junk food), but which are not always satisfactory for our overall welfare. The outcome is both short-term and long-term health problems. Nonetheless, all that was needed was a healthful diet to save us those mountains of medical expenses and a lifetime of physical discomfort. If there is one thing unhealthy foods have in common, it is their acidity. The body requires a perfect balance between acid-forming and alkaline-forming nutrients, to make possible it to function at its optimum. In fact, the body’s pH level (or level of acidity/alkalinity) tilts moderately toward the alkaline end of the spectrum. Unfortunately, many of the meals we eat today, especially processed foods, are mostly acidifying after they are integrated by the body.

But on the bright side, just as one can repair the pH level of an aquarium, one can turn an acidic body into an alkaline body. For the human body, the most successful way to change this is by turning your current way of eating into a more alkaline diet by adding certain foods that are inherently alkalizing. In spite of the fact that this will not generate an immediate change in the body’s pH level, its results will become evident if one keeps at it.

Foods that one can use to tip body pH through a more alkaline diet include Lemon, avocado, watermelon, pumpkin, flax seeds, lentils, artichokes, cauliflower, cabbage, onion, chives, and beets, among others. On the other hand, increasing alkalinity should be combined with a reduction in the intake of acid-forming foods like carbonated drinks, vinegar, mayonnaise, coffee, and processed snacks.

It’s important, of course, not to go to the other extreme and end up with an overly alkaline body. Be mindful that adopting an alkaline diet does not mean eliminating all foods that are acid-forming. Experts on nutrition have discovered that many foods we know to be acidic, actually transform into an alkaline state once they have been taken in. Some examples of these types of foods are grapefruits and limes. These citrus fruits contain citric acid when in their raw form, but are converted into alkalis as they go through the digestive system.
