In a study conducted by New York’s Strang-Cornell Cancer Research Laboratory, women who consumed a diet high in cruciferous vegetables experienced a dramatic drop in estrogen levels, which means that these vegetable are definitely powerful tools for fighting against breast cancer. The assumption is that the phytochemicals in these vegetables deactivate potent estrogens, thus preventing estrogen-sensitive cells, particularly in the breast , from developing tumors. Women with low estrogen levels seemed to have benefited most from daidzein, which reduced LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels, leading researchers to recommend that women include soy food products as part of their cardiovascular risk reduction strategies.

And last but not least is the phytonutrient, resveratrol, found in red wine, that literally makes wine drinking a cancer-fighting measure. Resveratrol is present in the leaves, twigs and bark of the grape vines. And red wine, which is fermented from grape skins, seeds and twigs tends to have large quantities of these cancer-fighting substances. Can Red Wine Help Lower Blood Pressure?  It All Depends

The  French Paradox  is the name given to the phenomenon in which the French, who eat several times more butter and lard than we do and who smoke more,  have 2 1/2 fewer heart attacks.

Researchers believe that the answer may be, in part, due to the fact that the French outdo us in the daily consumption of red wine which, in moderation, has long been thought to be heart-healthy.

Red wine contains flavonoids and resveratrols, substances that have been linked to a lower incidence of heart disease.   Both of these compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers believe that these substances have the effect of increasing the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, thereby reducing the formation of blood clots, and they also help in preventing damage to the arteries caused by high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) the "bad" cholesterol

The resveratrol in red  wine comes from the skin of the grapes that are used in making the wine.  In white wine the skins are not used.  The grapes produce resveratrol as protection against fungal infection.  Because of this, the amount of resversatrol in red wine varies from vineyard to vineyard depending on climate and other growing conditions.  The amount of rersveratrol is greater in grapes that are grown organically or in dry regions.

For those who may consider drinking red wine as a remedy to heart conditions, a recent article posted by the Mayo Clinic urges caution.  They point out in the article that while the heart-health benefits of red wine look promising, more research is needed in order to know if red wine is better for the heart than other forms of alcohol.  For those who already drink red wine, they advise us to do so in moderation.

The generally accepted definition of "moderate" drinking is no more than  two six ounce glasses of wine a day for men, and one six ounce glass of wine a day for women.  Because men generally weigh more, and because they have more of an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol, their limits are higher than women.

In general, medical experts don’t recommend that non-drinkers start drinking red wine as a means of preventing heart disease, as alcohol can be addictive and its misuse can cause other health problems.  Women may want to be aware of the potential connection between alchohol consumption and breast cancer.  For teetotalers, there are happy alternatives.  According to a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, purple grape juice, white grape juice and red wine were all tested for their heart protective effects.  The results showed that purple grape juice was every bit as beneficial as red wine, perhaps even more so.  Or, if you’d rather pop a capsule in your mouth when happy hour rolls around, a month’s supply of resverasol can be had for about the cost of a medium-priced bottle of wine.

In summary, a limited amount of red wine can have the beneficial effect of relaxing the body so that blood pressure is lowered, whereas too much red wine, or any other alcoholic drink, increases the risk of high blood pressure.  As the old saying goes: "All things in moderation."

Have you ever thought about the benefits of resveratrol use?  Resveratrol is an antioxidant that is very powerful at helping to combat diseases.  Diseases like cancer, heart problems, and strokes plus other health concerns like fatigue and obesity.

Resveratrol Improves Longevity Slows Heart Disease &  Free Radical Damage

Resveratrol is an amazing new discovery that enormously extends life expectancy.  A study in Burgundy France found the longevity of residents was 46% longer, in spite of a diet that consumed fats and other proven poor foods.  It is believed that the resveratrol in the red wine grape skins, especially abundant in Burgundy, was the reason.

There is flurry of current research that is investigating why this phenomenon is occurring. There appears to be two main reasons that explain why resveratrol is so effective in extending longevity.

The first is the stimulation of the longevity gene, SIRT1. The second relates to oxidative damage that is harmful to your body’s cells.

Hereditary, genetic diseases excluded, all other degenerative diseases are caused by inflammation. Cancer, heart disease, arthritis, kidney,  fibromyalgia, diabetes,  Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s  are the major ones most people are familiar with.

Free radical damage causes oxidative damage which translates into inflammation and cellular DNA damage, producing degenerative diseases. Most disease is produced by damaged DNA and inflammation.

We are inundated with a proliferation of toxic chemicals and substances that attack the mitochondria and the nucleus, impacting the DNA of every cell in your body, altering the genetic code, causing aging and pre-mature death. Cancer is a prime example of this.

Nearly everyone knows the term "carcinogen" is associated with cancer.  What this means is that certain substances, chemicals… can cause alteration of healthy cells which turn into cancer cells.  In simple terms, the mitochondria and genetic code of the cells get "messed up".  This spawns a misfit, rogue cancer cell.  If enough of these cancer cells proliferate and multiply, tumor cells develop. (anti-oxidants are helpful in preventing this)

The best way to combat disease is with a healthy body that has a strong immune system. Insults due to free radical damage and DNA degradation are stopped by prevention.  Resveratrol appears to be a supplement that enhances your immune system and thus extends life expectancy. 

In addition this can be accomplished by a healthy diet of good supplements, vitamins and especially raw, fresh vegetables and fruit. These all contain anti-oxidants that reduce the cellular damage and DNA injury. Prevention of pollution from air and water are also important.

Your body handles toxins each day, eliminating chemicals and foreign substances. Unfortunately our modern environment sometimes overwhelms your body with huge amounts of a substance that is carcinogenic…cancer causing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we are exposed to 80,000 toxic chemicals.  Virtually all people tested today for residual toxic chemicals have them.

In a recent study, researchers tested families for 107 man-made toxins.  Every single person, whether young or old, was found to have toxic contamination.

Prevention is the key to living longer and healthier.  Drinking filtered water, as most city water has high levels of chlorine that is a toxic substance when ingested on a daily basis.

Diet is a huge factor.  Anti oxidants from raw foods, vitamins and supplements counteract the  oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA.   Good anti oxidants are vitamins A, C, and E, lycopene and CoQ-10 enzyme in the ubiquinol form. Now resveratrol appears to be the biggest asset of them all.
